It causes shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing. It requires regular monitoring and a personalised treatment plan.
Food allergies
They manifest as abdominal pain, a rash, swelling or systemic reactions. They require diagnosis and monitoring by a specialist.
Skin allergies (atopic dermatitis, urticaria, contact dermatitis)
Itching, redness, a rash or dry skin. It is essential to identify the allergen and choose the right treatment.

They can cause swelling, hives and even anaphylactic reactions. They require diagnosis and discussion of immunotherapy.
Drug allergies
Skin reactions, shortness of breath or swelling following administration of the medicine. An allergy assessment is required, and safe alternatives must be identified.
Year-round inhalant allergies (house dust mites, mould, animal dander)
A persistent runny nose, cough and watery eyes. These require testing and long-term treatment.
Anaphylaxis – diagnosis and post-episode care
A sudden, severe allergic reaction. Following such an episode, a full assessment and a plan for further management are required.
How should you prepare for an appointment with an allergist?
To make the most of your appointment with an allergist, it is worth preparing properly in advance:
- Gather your medical records – the results of previous allergy tests, spirometry, blood tests (e.g. total and specific IgE), hospital discharge summaries and previous specialist consultations.
- Prepare a list of medications you are taking – particularly antihistamines, inhalers, steroids, dermatological medicines and supplements. Make a note of the doses and how often they are taken.
- Describe your symptoms – Make a note of when a runny nose, cough, shortness of breath, rashes, swelling, itching or reactions to food occur. It is also important to note situations in which the symptoms worsen.
- Write down your questions for the doctor – relating to diagnosis (skin tests, blood tests), immunotherapy, allergen avoidance or further treatment.
- Avoid taking antihistamines before your appointment – if skin tests are planned, you should usually stop taking them for 3–7 days (as advised by your doctor).
- Wear something comfortable – this will make it easier to carry out a physical examination and any skin tests.
Being well prepared enables the allergist to assess your symptoms more accurately and to plan the diagnosis and treatment of your allergy more quickly.
