How should you prepare for an appointment with an endocrinologist?
To make the most of your appointment with an endocrinologist, it is worth preparing properly in advance:
- Gather your medical records – hormone test results (TSH, FT3, FT4, prolactin, cortisol, insulin, glucose), a thyroid ultrasound, previous consultations and hospital discharge summaries.
- Prepare a list of medications you are taking – particularly hormonal medicines, antidiabetic medicines, steroids and supplements (e.g. iodine, selenium, vitamin D). Make a note of the doses and how often you take them.
- Describe your symptoms – make a note of any changes in your weight, menstrual irregularities, mood swings, tiredness, heart palpitations, skin problems or any other symptoms that concern you.
- Write down your questions for the doctor – relating to diagnosis, necessary tests, treatment or further management.
- Wear something comfortable – This will make it easier to carry out a thyroid ultrasound and a physical examination.
Being well prepared enables the endocrinologist to assess your health more accurately and to plan further diagnostic tests or treatment for hormonal disorders more quickly.
